Advances of artificial intelligence are being made more rapidly and more frequently. Scientists have been working on and discovering new human-mimicking computer functions since the 1950’s and in due time, advanced technology will probably be able to do most human functions. While limiting the work humans have to do in their everyday lives, artificial intelligence has the potential to decrease the need for human labor and the work-force.

Recently AI has become more controversial because like all technology, it has both drawbacks and benefits. Some people fear that it will be able to outsmart them, take away a large number of their jobs and responsibilities, and in some cases, even harm them. These people have reason to believe that AI has the potential to bring them down given that AI is becoming smarter than humans everyday.

Current technology makes AI that is exponentially faster than humans’ memory and math skills and beats humans in each and every game concerning calculations. Some AI even poses the threat of death. For example , Autonomous weapons are AI that are programmed to kill and can easily impose mass casualties. These forms of  AI are not simple to stop and if they are used and aren’t stopped in time, humans can lose control of a situation. The military is already debating the implantation of autonomous weapons drones without human intervention.

Scientists plan to continue research and advancements in AI to improve it and make it do many more human functions.  AI will not develop into “superhuman” this soon but, achieving AI that is as smart as- if not smarter- than humans seems to be the long term goal. Scientists even plan on inventing AI that can solve problems that humans can’t and improve itself on its own.

“An attempt will be made to find how to make machines use language, form abstractions and concepts, solve kinds of problems now reserved for humans, and improve themselves. We think that a significant advance can be made in one or more of these problems if a carefully selected group of scientists work on it together for a summer.” John McCarthy the man who coined the term “artificial intelligence”, said.

As artificial intelligence and modern technology advances, many of man’s duties decrease. No one knows if AI will actually fully measure up to or beat the human race but, it is known that AI still has a lot of progress and will not entirely reach human capabilities anytime soon.
